Every July the same messages arrive: water streaming down bedroom windows in the morning, black spots appearing on the bathroom ceiling, a musty smell in the wardrobe that wasn’t there in summer. None of it means your house is failing β it means your house is in Auckland, where mild wet winters and warm humid interiors meet single glazing and yesterday’s insulation standards. Here’s what’s actually happening and what genuinely helps.
Why Auckland winters breed condensation
Condensation is simple physics: warm air holds moisture, cold surfaces make it let go. An average household puts litres of water vapour into the air every day β cooking, showers, drying clothes inside, even breathing β and when that humid air touches a cold window pane or an uninsulated wall corner overnight, the water condenses. Auckland’s winter twist is that it rarely gets cold enough to force serious heating (which dries air out), while staying damp enough outside that opening windows feels counterproductive. The result: moisture accumulates indoors for months.
Where mould shows up first β and what it’s telling you
- Window reveals and sills β pure condensation. The glass is the coldest surface in the room.
- Bathroom ceilings β shower steam meeting an unventilated or under-ventilated ceiling.
- South-facing bedroom corners β cold exterior wall plus furniture blocking airflow. Wardrobes on south walls are the classic case.
- Behind beds and couches against exterior walls β same mechanism: cold surface, no air movement.
The pattern matters: mould where air doesn’t move points to ventilation; mould on a specific wall regardless of airflow can point to an exterior problem β a leaking gutter or cracked cladding letting water in. If a wall is mouldy and the outside of it is streaked or green, look outside first.
The fixes that actually work
- Ventilate on the dry days. Ten minutes of cross-draught on a clear morning removes more moisture than a day of cracked windows in the rain. Auckland gives you those windows most weeks, even in July.
- Run the extractor fans longer. Bathroom fans need 15β20 minutes after the shower, not 3. If your fan can’t hold a sheet of toilet paper against the grille, it’s not extracting.
- Stop drying clothes inside unvented. A single load of washing releases around two litres of water into your air. Vent the dryer outside or use a heat-pump dryer.
- Use the heat pump’s dry mode. Most Auckland homes have a dehumidifier built into the wall and never use it β the “dry” setting removes moisture at low energy cost on damp days.
- Pull furniture off exterior walls. Even 5 cm of gap restores enough airflow to stop the wardrobe-corner mould cycle.
When the musty smell is the heat pump itself
If the mustiness arrives the moment the heat pump starts, the mould is inside the unit β growing on the coil and fan drum where condensation sits between uses. Cleaning the filters won’t reach it; the unit needs to be opened and the coil and fan properly cleaned.
